Dear People Who Say “Real Women Have _____”,

While I am all about accepting women who stray from the ideals of our culture by daring to say, wear a size larger than a zero or (heavens to Betsy) have body parts that jiggle, I have to let you know that ALL women are real women.

Yes, even models and otherwise skinny ladies. Yes, even Heidi Klum. Even Kate Moss. Even Sarah Palin. Not all women are average women, not all women are likable women, or agree-with-able women, but all women have hereby officially earned the right to be considered and referred to as real, even if theirs are the bodies and minds that are creating the ideals we so often chafe against. Just as we have to defend conservative women and liberal women alike from misogynistic attack, we also have to defend every woman’s right to have exactly the body she has. It’s part of feminism.

The robots, however, can fend for themselves.

Love,

Mary

Yes, the body she has.  Not the body she feels she needs to have based on the ideals of greater society or the media.  Let’s not forget that most of these models need to uptake a size below 0 because they are told to.  They are told that they can not work an outfit down the runway unless they look like a human hanger.  And let’s not forget that most women placed on magazine covers and all throughout the pages inside magazines are thin, sometimes sickly thin.  And we all know it makes all us women look at our bodies and think, Where am I in these pages?  Is my body desirable? Acceptable?

So while I am all for Real Women Have ________.  I am going to say, Real Women Have Curves, until women like me are placed on billboards and magazines and even walking down the runway in the most popular and recognized designer names.

I agree, it totally sucks that women like you (and me) don’t show up on billboards and in magazines. I just have a real problem implying that ANY woman isn’t a real woman because of her size, even if that size was forced upon her. We shouldn’t be disenfranchising, kicking out of womanhood, the very women who need feminism and HAES the most. Being thin may not be making them happy, but it doesn’t make them inhuman, unreal.
